Mark Webb wins the Braun cruZer Tour for third year in a row!!
The last stop of the Braun cruZer Tour took place at the Suzuki BMXMasters 08 in Cologne Jugendpark. After an exciting qualification round on the Friday evening the crowd was pumped for a top class spectacular to follow. and thats exactly what they got. The sun shone on and thousands of dedicated BMX fans turned up to roar and whistle and get the riders properly syked up.
At FISE and in particular at NASS, top seeds Mark Webb (UK) and Daniel Dhers (VEN) had been chased by young Liverpudlian Harry Main, all three then being in with a shot at winning the competition overall. With the Suzuki BMXMasters, the worlds biggest BMX contest, attracting riders from all over the globe the starter list was longer and included some very real threats to the top three contestants- the game was thrown wide open. Ben Wallace (UK) who has come second overall for the last two years was back to have his say as well as other pro riders like Ryan Guettler (AUS), Dennis Enarson (USA), Dave Osato (CAN), Diogo Canina (USA), Jake Toohey (AUS) and Balaz Ivanti (HUN).
With 12 lined up for the finals everything was in the air. Jason Phelan from Ireland got the ball rolling getting massive air over the Spine and a huge reaction form the wild crowd. From then on the contest went off! Every rider pulled incredible tricks including a backflip and a Superman over the 2.10 meter high Spine. Main has continued to improve and flew way high ripping tricks like no handed 360s and a tailwhip 540s. While Harry pulled some awesome tricks he also made a few errors which must have let down his final scoring but this kid is incredible and will definitely be one to watch for in 2009. Dhers received his usual massive support from the public to which he responded by delivering a smooth, sleek and near perfect selection of tricks. It was clear Mark had some concerns about his back but for his last run he totally went for it pulling off a decade to 540 tire tap to ice-pick, a tailwhip to manual on the sub box and a double tailwhip to tire tap as well as countless others. Mark had the judges jumping! His originality, consistency and use of the whole ramp won them over and him, the competition.
Mark was obviously thrilled to have won the Braun cruZer Tour averall yet again "I know I've won it a couple of times already but to win this one after everything that's gone on is really a big deal for me. It's a big come back. I've worked really hard and every time I've picked myself up over the last year I've ended up getting knocked down with another injury so I'm so stoked to take this home."
Ben Wallace came in third at the Suzuki BMXMasters so Harry Main maintained his third place overall. The overall results are as follows: 1st Mark Webb (UK) 2nd Daniel Dhers (VEN) 3rd Harry Main (UK)
